Spin fishing gear

Post by joe_panella » Sat Apr 01, 2023 5:14 pm

I know basically nothing about spin fishing anymore. What kind/size spinning rod and reel do you use for trout. Also what are the popular spinners people use and what size. Thanks in advance. I want to get my kids fishing, and I want to slowly work them into fly rods.

Okuma trout reel (it was originally in white) and a 5" St Croix rod. Very flexible and versatile for trout, panfish and small bass.

My kids all learned on 6" medium Johnny Morris bass pro rods that I had from tournament days....better for "bigger" fish and can be used in salt or fresh water

I use my Fenwick F74-4 fly/spin combo hollow fiberglass rod with a Mitchell 308 and 4lb test. Have had this combo for many, many years for my travels. Best trout lure I've found is the Jakes lure, any one of them in the correct size.

can't help you on equipment, all my spinning gear is 30-40 years old. I do prefer ultra-light rods though and 4lb test (lower breaking point for the inevitable snags).

For trout lures I prefer that panther martin shown above in the smaller size. As well as Mepps spinners size 0 or 1 and small Phoebe's but it's been a while since I intentionally cast a lure for trout. I just did so much spin fishing from ages 7 - 18 that it just doesn't do it for me anymore when it comes to trout.

Size # 0 for spinners is the way to go for trout imo. I rarely use spinners. I use jigs to get trout of all sizes

A 2,400 yard spool of 4 lb test? That's enough for every trout angler in NJ to re-spool with!

How many times have you changed the bail spring on the 308? That was one of my "jobs" as a teen, service dad's and uncle's 308's. :)
