Garden State Trout

Hi All,

I am coming to visit my parents this weekend/early next week and would like to to take my Dad and kid smallie fishing on either the SBR or NBR. My parents live in Tewksbury so Flemington is about 20-25 minutes and the NBR would be a similar distance. My dad is 75 and in good shape, but I don't know want to push him to hard in terms of climbing down a cliff/really shaky bank. Any thoughts on a good spots to access either of these rivers for bank fishing or pretty easy wet wading? Feel free to PM me or post here.

Wow, there is so much more public land than I remember in the Clinton-Flemington stretch of the river and I think I remember the area around Packers island holding some decent smallies. Any other tips for parking/access would be appreciated.

I will scout out some of the access points near Packer island to see what would be best for my dad and then take him.

Dukes Island SBR stretch hold's some tanks. Id fish from dukes island down to the old nevuis street dam. That stretch is usually on fire

I was able catch a few nice ones just outside of Flemington. Nothing photoworthy, but some hard fighting 12-13 inch river fish in fast water. I also fished a small rustic LMB pond in a Hunterdon county state park and caught several of the hardest fighting and acrobatic largies-again not huge, in the 12-15 inch category, but really healthy!

I would have taken some pics other the LMB and the bass pond, but my phone somehow rebooted and stopped working. Honestly, I have become much more of a SMB fan compared to LMB as the smallies fight harder and I prefer river fishing to stillwater, but last night restored some of my affinity for LMB. I was also using an UIlralight spinning rod instead of a medium rod, so the fight was more impressive. Even with the drag set pretty tight, they were pulling out drag and then doing acrobatics. Its a springfed pond with coolish water, so perhaps that also added to their vigor.
