Hot Spring 2018 Flies
Hot Spring 2018 Flies
Admitidly spring flies, particularly dry flies are not my strong point. So what are the hot flies everyone likes to tie for the spring season that should see some action? I still nymph early season with your standard pheasant tail and hares ear flies but I know many others will get fish on the line!

Re: Hot Spring 2018 Flies
Hi, I think with this cold weather and rain the regular fly hatches will probably be off by at least a week. I think the Hendrickson and Gordon’s will be hatching the end of April or the first week in May. I fished the Ramapo this pass Sat. And saw a few Caddis and some black stoneflies flying around but did not see any rising fish at all. Caught 2 trout and a couple of hits but being rusty missed the hits. That was last Sat. And then the rains came and the Ramapo went sky high and the last I looked it was still up and flowing rather fast. The reason I fished the Ramapo is I’m doggie sitting my daughters dogs and I’m going home this afternoon. I live in Manahawkin,NJ. Bill the mailman

IRIS CADDIS!!!!! Pheasant tail soft hackle...
Re: Hot Spring 2018 Flies
Little black stones and chimarras are done. Small emergers and Frenchies worked today for me. Hendricksons are active and may work but stuck with what I was using as it worked.

Re: Hot Spring 2018 Flies
I normally do well early season with a copperhead nymph (copper bead head copper ribbed hare’s ear), Partridge and Orange Soft Hackle, Copper John nymph, and small fluttering caddis dry flies. My only time out this season I caught a bunch of wild trout with fluttering caddis dries and one using a Copper John. I do not limit myself to nymphs early season since a couple of 60 degree days will get some insects moving.
