Will we get any ice fishing in this year?

Post by Rusty Spinner » Sat Jan 12, 2019 11:18 am

What does everyone think? I know I saw a few intrepid anglers out on Budd Lake in early December for about a day or two, but most of that lake remained open at the time. We really haven't had a sharp cold snap since, but right now it's calm with a high here of 25 and the sun isn't too bright. We may see some of the earlier lakes and ponds freeze over again this weekend and be safe in some areas next week. Too soon to say. Anyone get out in other states?

Long range forecasts into mid February look favorable for ice fishing.

yup, looks like it. I was just looking at Monday's forecast when I bring my daughter back to college and it's supposed to be a high of 12 F with a low that night of 5F. If lakes are already frozen over now, nights and days like that will help. Even today with little or no sun (at least up north), we added some ice. Let's get out there soon! This weekend's weather is supposed to suck and I have the Fisheries Forum meeting at Hackettstown on Saturday at 10 am.

Lots of friends on forums and Facebook are gearing up for some ice time. Several areas up north here have safe ice (4" - 6").

Not me, I put the ice in a glass and pour alcohol over it to preserve it.

I'm a bourbon drinker, but I'm sure we will pound beers instead with the odd snort from a flask or two.....Saturday is our day! I'll be out with Mike/TF4L on the lake I grew up on with my childhood buddies, a half ton of venison, and plenty of booze while our kids do all the work. Life is good :)

Planning on going out to Little Swartswood with friends on Sunday. They have an Ice Fishing Contest if anyone else is interested here is the link https://www.facebook.com/events/369021216904227/ The little lake had 8" before the deep freeze and the big lake has 5 1/2"
I fish because the voices in my head tell me to.

My brother got a fat 35 inch Pike on Budd Lake before the deep freeze. Unfortunately no pictures to prove it!

Come on, it says right under the picture that is re-sized, it was probably only 8 inches... ;)
