Musky morning
Cone head bugger in the slow water. The water was more off color than I expected.

Re: Musky morning
Thats a beast of a rainbow. I have never seen coloration like that!! What spawning cycle is he on?
Re: Musky morning
I fished it also this morning. Water was flowing and yes, off colored. I landed and released four on an a bugger, missed a few others, nothing like yours though. Perhaps stocked by a club?

Re: Musky morning
That's a remnant of the Charles O. Hayford days when our rainbows were specifically chosen for their red stripe which Charles was apparently a big fan of. I have seen many state stocked, holdover or freshly stocked breeders that look just like this. These are Division stockies, not the Kamloops raised by Musky Trout Hatchery. There was an article floating around about Hayford, father of the first NJ state hatchery in Hackettstown (now warmwater hatchery) and his preference and selective breeding of the red stripe on the rainbows.

Re: Musky morning
Here's an article that talks about his selective breeding, but in a quick glance I didn't see anything about rainbows or the red stripe I know I've read about elsewhere.

This one mentions both selective breeding of trout and "for color".

Thanks for the info Rusty. I should be heading up to the WB in a couple of weeks, hoping mid July is less wet and flows are perfect for wading.

Re: Musky morning
The flows are dropping nicely up there for a change! I'm headed to the beach this week (Thur. - Sun.) to fish and drink and eat (sometimes all at once). But next week will be a sulphur run to the West Branch at some point!

If you do a day trip, Brian, and have room or inclination for company, let me know.
