So, the browns from Hackettstown, so I have been told, and I think I have caught a few, have the bigger spots and less red spots....in my opinion, those fish fight harder and look better than the ones the state used to raise....maybe because the government doesn't run it...ooooops, thats for another forum

Oh, and also, look for a blue spot on the fishes cheek...another sign of wild browns....

When was the last time Brown Trout from Hackettstown were stocked anywhere?

OK, so mystery is solved (mystery to me....). I thought today might be a pretty good streamer day, and I was right. I had to "make a trip to Home Depot" so on my way I made a very slight detour for about 30 mins. on the SBR. I got these 4 on 5 casts. all around 15-16", thick and feisty. Lost a 5th at the net, then I think I blew the pool. Anyway, all these have stocky fins, but that distinct color/markings that I was originally talking about. I assume that I have Anglers Anonymous to thanks for these, so if there re any members on here... thanks!






Question though, when talking about the Hackettstown hatchery, do we mean the Musky Hatchery in Asbury?

No the Musky Hatchery is private, the State hatchery is in Hacketstown.

Hello, When did Hackettstown hatchery start stocking trout? I thought they made the hatchery into a warm water fishery. They raise Pike, Bass and other warm water fish. They haven’t raised trout there in years although they keep some really large trout in the one pond by the building where we pick up the stocking tanks onFridays. Are clubs that high on the South Branch supposed to be stocking brown trout ???

I'm wrong the State hatchery is in Oxford, 9 miles west of Hacketstown. The Hacktstown hatchery stopped producing trout in 1981, but the Musky hatchery is still private.

1) that brown is 110% from the Musky Trout Hatchery. All browns from that hatchery look identical.
2) there are four clubs along the SBR and all stock trout from Musky Trout Hatchery with approved Division stocking permits.
3) while the Hackettstown state hatchery is now warmwater save for growing landlocked Atlantic salmon from Mass larger, it used to raise brooks, browns and rainbows until the early 70s.
