Report: Clairmont Stretch 13 June 2020. No Trespassing???

Post by Bubba Zinetti » Mon Jun 15, 2020 1:03 pm

Greetings. We hit the water around 08:30 right at the lower bridge, just above the pool where there was (notice I said was) a rope swing. We brought 4 nice browns about 8-10 inches to hand with a copper John size 16. The water became pretty shallow about halfway to the bridge before the big pool, and nothing was seen or caught there. In many places it barely covered the tops of my boots. We fished up to the big pool, but the 2 guys who were there had just finished and either caught every fish, or put them off the bite. We were off the water by 11:45. Over all it was pretty nice to be out.

No Trespassing? The former rope swing was gone as was the large tree branch that supported it. There were No Trespassing signs. I was unsure of if this was legit or not, and I didn't feel like going back upstream and crossing over to approach from the other side. I did encounter an angler fishing from the other side (left bank facing upstream), who said he did not see any signs. I the rope swing attracted too much attention. A question to you: Is that private property? I thought it was state/county owned land?

That fort is a 15 min walk upstream of the big Claremont pool / old bridge parking area. I saw it about 1.5 months ago. Some HS kids just hanging out...they were actually cleaning up the river and that area it seemed.
Hopefully, they keep it clean.

There was also an old fridge in the water at the tailout of the big pool...

It's Claremont, for the record. The old TCA was in Morris County Park owned lands, but I believe the items we see photos of is on private lands. Ironically, the state's online tax maps is not showing any part of Washington Twp. in Morris County right now, so I can't look at lots and blocks right now. The upstream boundary is the private Anglers Anonymous club. That is private I know. But no land has been sold by the County.

That rope swing has been there forever and was just recently taken down. There is a small stretch on the side of the river that the rope swing was on of private land that starts below where electric brook flows in but the other side is public. Not only did they take the swing down but they cut the big branch down that it was hanging on. I looked on tax maps and the private land starts right around where the swing was so its debatable whether it was on private or public land.

Hey SBRtool, yah, I looked at tax maps also, but I too am unsure where the public land stops, and where it starts again on that side of the river. I understand the problem with the rope swing, trash etc... As you no doubt saw, there were no trespassing signs well before where the private property starts. Every little bit of access we give up, is a bit we will never get back. I really don't know where to go with this.

Looks like a Land Use Regulation violation of dumping boulders along the bank without a permit................just saying. No fill in the floodplain without a Freshwater Wetlands permit from DEP.

I have a bias here, this is one of our favorite spots. That said, would calling the DEP escalate the situation? I sure would like to not have to cross before fishing that spot, but if that is what I have to do, then so be it. I fear that calling the DEP would prompt them to put up fences, and do other not so nice things. They have already posted signs well before their property.

I have never fished that section, and perhaps those are just unflattering photos, but that looks like some Grade A chub water to me.
