Tippet rings - thoughts?

Post by garden hackle » Wed May 27, 2020 10:01 am

I have some, but very rarely use them.

It appears to be an ideal use for a dropper fly, but anyone can achieve the same thing by either tying off of the eye or the tail bend (that could be a different discussion). Or, is there an advantage to using a tippet ring?

Who uses them and why is there an advantage?

Love tippet rings! I use them on all my leaders, and yes, even for dries! Sorry Jay!

I use at least two of them on my nymphing leader when going from 2/3x to 4x and 4x to 5x. For dries I use them at the end of the tapered leader to go to my final section of 5x tippet. They really do save your leaders and allow you to use them for much longer and no blood knots, the most evil of the fishing knots!! Two simple clinch knots and you are off! Also when you are snagged the lighter tipper knot tends to break so you are left with the rest of your leader intact with the ring and ready to tie on a new final section.

Grab them with your forceps to tie the initial knot, this helps a lot! Trying to pick up those little buggers with your hands is a recipe for frustration and losing many.

This video (both creepy and hilarious with the Barbee Doll) suggests tippet rings are either "the best thing since sliced bread or may represent the end of civilized fly fishing as we know it." In any case, I definitely like them for nymphing but am yet to use them on a dry fly (microdrag issue?). https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_cont ... e=emb_logo

Most furled leaders have tippet rings on them.

I love them. As stated most furled leaders come with them. I tie them into my Tenkara level lines. I also use micro-swivels on my streamer leaders.

Would someone explain the "furled leader" idea? I was using tippet rings just last night on the Delaware and my sighter and tippet seemed at one point to get all twisted up. Is that what the "furled" is about?

At the risk of alienating some, furled leaders are for those that can't cast. There, I said it.

Your not alienating me. With the limited time I get on the river with little kids it is a surprise I can still catch a few fish.
