Exploring an Afternoon on the Black River 2/5/2021
I had a half-day scheduled at work on Friday so I decided to hit the Black for some winter nymphing in the afternoon hours.
While I managed to hook only one fat rainbow on a rainbow warrior #16 (didn't land it--got caught in submerged debris & broke off), I did manage some cool photos of the area.

That stream in hacklebarney always had a million snags from over hanging trees . But it dosent get much prettier than that stretch .

I believe that was the last river we fished together, maybe even the last time we saw each other.
I can't recall if we did a combo trip of the Black River & Passaic River, or only fished the upper Passaic that day, but it was about 4 of us if I remember correctly.

P.S. I'm wearing a PFD in ankle deep water One day I'll tell the story of how I almost slid down a waterfall as I tried to fish a Pool.

The Black River in Hacklebarney is my favorite place to fish for trout in NJ.

What is the wild trout situation like in Hacklebarny on the Black. My time is valuable at this state of my life, i try not waste it in put and take fisheries.

last time i fished it like two years ago there was a few of small brownies most likely because they were pushed out of the tributaries.joe_panella wrote: ↑Thu Feb 18, 2021 8:43 amWhat is the wild trout situation like in Hacklebarny on the Black. Go there around opening day, and see it's clearly fished like a put-n-take fishery. So if you're not looking for that experience id look elsewhere for access

My data is a bit old as well, but if I were you I would go elsewhere. I think you know better spots.joe_panella wrote: ↑Thu Feb 18, 2021 8:43 amWhat is the wild trout situation like in Hacklebarny on the Black. It was always borderline water meaning a few wild browns were caught from time to time. I imagine that dam upriver does not help the situation.
