It won't be long now!

Post by Rusty Spinner » Wed Feb 24, 2021 6:17 pm

So we got a real winter once again. Like most of you, I'm ready for spring. But a nice day like today (I was stuck inside) makes you want to grab the fly rod and walk through some snow to drop a line with an LBS nymph dangling down in the depths. As nice as it is on days like this, the rivers are flashing with water barely over 32 degrees. This is the time of year where the southern streams out fish the northern streams due to the difference in snow totals. Soon enough the northern snows will melt as well, and we may see a midge or LBS hatch bring fish to the top. More often than not, we await the Hendricksons later on in Spring for rising trout. Good luck to all who venture out!

I love winter and skiing but I too am looking forward to spring after all the snow and ice storms down in DC. I have never seen ice like I did this year in DC-I was living in Montreal during the ice storm of 98 and DC may have been worse this year as there were so many consecutive snow and ice storms in February here. I just about broke my shoulder and concussed myself this Monday when I slipped on ice two inches thick as I was trying to clear my driveway. The Potomac water temps dipped to 34 degrees this week but are starting to rebound. I have a few more local ski trips and one to Vermont in mid march and then its trout/shad/white perch/pre spawn bass/crappie time!

I heard spring will be early and warmer than normal this year. Time will tell. But yesterday (53 F and sunny) felt like heaven.

Here it comes...March....the lion/lamb month.

March has at least one good snow in it, but it's full speed ahead to spring hatches.

Winter has zero effect on tick populations. They are all crawling around in the leaves beneath the snow, waiting for a hapless critter to walk past. Wish it weren't so, but winter does not kill ticks one bit.

True - I know someone who keeps them on his property in the Catskills for that one reason.

Chickens eat ticks also...you better have a ot of quail, guineas, and chickens to control ticks. Although helpful they will never get them all. Anyway, it's starting to thaw and spring will be here before we know it.😀
