BooFest 2018

Post by Twism86 » Wed Jun 13, 2018 11:13 am

No its not about ghosts or Halloween but rather bamboo fly rods! A friend hosts BoofFest each year at his cabin in the Catskills with a stocked spring fed trout pond. I finally made it up this year and had a blast! Boo, beer and BBQ! I have never spent much time casting bamboo but now that I have I really can say its an enjoyable way to fish! The rods cast slow and have good action for fighting fish, even the littler ones put a decent bend it the rod. Way more fun to fish than a graphite stick, even if you are not catching fish. The pond was spring fed and cold and the fish were hungry. They were not that picky, I caught some on dries, nymphs and buggers. A good beer was always also in hand along with food on the smoker!

Here are some pics of fish, bamboo and a few others. The one of me passed out and taped to chair will not make it here..... Still made it to my tent though!

Is this a private event? Sounds pretty awesome to me.

Be careful with those rods. It can get very expensive. :D

You can get some pretty good rods on ebay for very reasonable prices. Dennis Stone and Bill Critchfield all have new rods on there regularly. You can get them for around 500 usually.

I can't speak for the host, but when "Ronbo" was still active at NEFF, I got the impression that anyone who was enough of a flyfisher to own, or have an interest in, cane rods was welcome.... Even "Beetle" was allowed.

My go to rod is a 7'9" Wagner Patriot. I quit graphite pretty much when I got it.

He is the man, mine is called a midge special, it was built for a guy in Michigan, I got it used...it has a hand rubbed finish. Sweet piece!
I still use my Winston most of the time, as the Wagner is only 7' 3wt. not good for nymphing..it is solely a small stream dry fly rod.

Jeff is a great guy too, I used to chat him up when he and Casamira would have a booth at the Somerset show. He even did some work on a tight ferrule there. Just a 1st class guy all the way. I bought the lowest end of his rod line and he still made sure to have a phone conversation with me to discuss where I fished, how I fished, what I mainly fished for, and what I wanted out of the rods performance. Treated me as if I was buying one of his presentation series rods.

This bamboo thing is addicting too. I'm always on the look out for more rods!
