Alright, which one of you forgot to do a rain dance??
Re: Alright, which one of you forgot to do a rain dance??
Today's rain looks more widespread and substantial throughout trout country. I have never felt it this cold and rainy for so long down here in the DC area-we havent seen the sun since Thursday and its been stuck in 40s/low 50s with off and on rain-I even had to put the heat on to take the chill off as there has been no sun to warm up the house! Not nearly enough rain in NW NJ but as always, better than nothing.

So far, the upper SBR watershed has seen about 1.6" of rain between yesterday and today. Some areas not far have seen 3" or more. We certainly need it!

Who cares about the stockers. We need water for the fall spawn.

Looks like the rain is continuing off and on and strong flows are being sustained in Morris, Hunterdon, Passaic counties-looks like the rainfall hasn't been as consistent in Sussex county. With the cold weather and increased flows, fish will be looking to get ready to spawn.

They have another 4-5 weeks yet before they spawn. This rain will be gone by Sunday. We are way, way, WAY behind in rain for the year. The only help now is a lot of snow that melts slowly. Or rain like this once a week for the rest of the year.martalus wrote: ↑Wed Oct 05, 2022 11:06 amLooks like the rain is continuing off and on and strong flows are being sustained in Morris, Hunterdon, Passaic counties-looks like the rainfall hasn't been as consistent in Sussex county. Given mother nature's propensity for self correction we could be in for a hearty, snow filled winter.Rusty Spinner wrote: ↑Wed Oct 05, 2022 12:51 pmThey have another 4-5 weeks yet before they spawn. I agree, and we need that badly! Our ground is bone dry despite some minor rains of late.Drossi wrote: ↑Wed Oct 05, 2022 4:45 pmGiven mother nature's propensity for self correction we could be in for a hearty, snow filled winter.Rusty Spinner wrote: ↑Wed Oct 05, 2022 12:51 pmThey have another 4-5 weeks yet before they spawn. Could be about an inch today and then a more regular pattern of some rain every few days. I have a feeling its going to be a cold and snowy winter.

If it isn't, we're screwed next Spring. Ground water remains very, very low this year.

Here is a helpful link to see rain deficits in various increments over the past year.
One other issue that impacts ground water in NJ is that so many of our trout streams flow through areas with significant residential development and most/all of these houses use groundwater via their wells for everything (drinking, laundry, showers, watering lawns. etc.) Many other states in the region have trout streams that are more in forested areas/state parks/game lands, etc., thus residential water use is less of a drain on groundwater.

100% spot on. I can for sure remember the Musky, SBR, and Rockaway maintaining better flows through the summers before subdivisions sprung up all over Morris County in the last 40 years.martalus wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 10:27 am

While flows and rainfall may not be ideal, it doesnt look catostrophic for the spawn. We seem to have settled into a regular pattern of some rain a few days a week.

Streams are actually fine in that regard. Haven't seen a redd yet, but haven't looked yet this week either.
